Senior Specialist, Sensors & Algorithms+

Polar Electro is looking for a Senior Specialist (Materials and Measurement Technologies) for the Sensors & Algorithms Team

Polar Research Center is part of Polar R&D and acts as an innovation accelerator for Polar product and service developments. The Research Center comprises a multidisciplinary team with expertise ranging from sensor technology and algorithms to physiology, data, and AI sciences, as well as exercise and health sciences. The team conducts cutting-edge research in wearable technologies, follows scientific developments, and collaborates globally with academic and industry partners. Polar Research Center is located at our headquarters in Kempele. 

As a Senior Specialist on the Sensors&Algorithms team, you will drive the development of next-generation sensing solutions and technologies for Polar products. You will collaborate with experts from various fields and help transform innovative concepts into manufacturable products.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Research and develop advanced sensing technologies for e.g. ECG, PPG or BIA.
  • Research and introduce new materials for future solutions.
  • Evaluate conductive and soft conductive materials for wearable measurement applications.
  • Prototype, test, and iterate new concepts and hardware solutions taking also into account scalability and production feasibility.
  • Collaborate with researchers, engineers, designers, and external technology partners.
  • Support technology scouting and supplier collaboration.

We expect you to have:

  • At least MSc in Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong expertise in measurement technologies and sensing principles.
  • Solid understanding of materials science, particularly conductive materials.
  • Experience in research, prototyping, testing, verification and validation.
  • Understanding of product development.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing technologies and mass production methods.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Considered as an advantage:

  • Experience with conductive soft materials and wearable technologies.
  • Proficiency in CAD and mechanical design tools.
  • Experience with simulation and modeling tools.
  • Knowledge of physiological measurements and biosignals.
  • Understanding of wearable device use comfortability and usability.
  • Knowledge of optomechanical systems.
  • Understanding of medical devices and related regulations.
  • Experience working with suppliers and technology partners.

Position is located at Polar Headquarters in Kempele.

Senior Data/AI Scientist, Data Analytics & AI+

Polar Electro is looking for a Senior Data/AI Scientist for the Data Analytics & AI team

The team conducts cutting-edge research in wearable technologies, follows scientific developments, and collaborates globally with academic and industry partners. Polar Research Center is located at our headquarters in Kempele. 

As a Senior Data/AI Scientist, you will turn data from our wearables, mobile app, and cloud services into insights that guide business decisions, R&D, and customer experience development. You will also contribute AI / ML model development, data modeling, and help steer where our analytics technology goes next. 

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Analyze Polar data to support business decisions across the company
  • Provide and analyze data for R&D purposes, including insights that feed product and algorithm development
  • Deliver customer experience analytics that guide product development
  • Contribute to data engineering — how our data is modeled and made available to our data analytics services
  • Contribute to the technological development and future roadmap of our data analytics

We expect you to have:

  • Master’s or PhD degree or equivalent experience in computer science, applied mathematics, physics, biomedical engineering, or other related technical field
  • Senior-level experience in applied data analytics 
  • Advanced proficiency in SQL and Python / PySpark
  • Experience with cloud data platforms — we mainly work with Databricks and AWS
  • Understanding of data modeling and data engineering practices
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills in English, with the ability to work in multidisciplinary teams

Considered as an advantage:

  • Experience with physiological, sensor, and time-series data
  • Knowledge of GDPR and experience working with health data
  • Experience analyzing business and customer experience data
  • Experience in AI / ML model development
  • Experience in data and ML engineering with Databrics and AWS

Job location is any Polar office in Finland (Kempele, Helsinki, Jyväskylä, or Tampere), with Kempele headquarters preferred. Polar supports a hybrid working model, offering flexibility between office and remote work.

Polar Research Center is located at our headquarters in Kempele.  

We are looking for a Senior Researcher, Algorithms to advance the next generation of sports, fitness, and wellness solutions at Polar. Alongside other researchers, designers, and engineers, you will contribute to transforming scientific knowledge into practical innovations that deliver meaningful value to our customers around the world. 

Your responsibilities will include: 

  • Design and develop algorithms employing various data (e.g. biosignals, inertial data) for new Polar Smart Coaching solutions in close collaboration with a multidisciplinary team 
  • Investigate and innovate new Polar feature and application possibilities in internal and collaborative research projects 
  • Design and supervise data collection studies for algorithm research and development 
  • Report research findings including algorithm performance and feasibility  

We expect you to have: 

  • Master's / Ph.D. degree in relevant field, such as biomedical engineering, biophysics, mathematics, or health sciences 
  • Experience in development of algorithms and computational methods 
  • Solid programming skills in Python 
  • Experience with time-series data and signal processing 
  • Collegial attitude and good communication skills in English

Considered as an advantage:  

  • Understanding of human physiology and biosignals 
  • Experience with code collaboration tools (e.g. Git) and practices 
  • Experience with wearable sensors 
  • Experience in applying AI/machine learning methods in algorithm development 
  • Passion for research and development of wellness and sport applications and devices
