Is it a strange admission to say you love walking in circles? Well, that's exactly where my mind went when we started planning this Loop issue of Polar's Journal (celebrating, of course, the launch of Polar Loop). By walking in circles, I mean: give me a selection of hiking trails, and I’ll be most enthusiastic about the one that does the whole loop, delivering me right back where I started. Perhaps it is about this coming full circle, but mainly I think it's the convenience of being able to start and end in one location.

Daily walks are the same. Whenever I’m living in a new area, I don’t feel quite at home until I’ve found my local loop. When I know my route, I can go into autopilot in a sense, almost like a meditative state, especially when I’m in nature. I know that it will take me exactly where I want to go, in a particular time frame and without having to walk back and forth past the same place on the same day or check my maps repeatedly.

The most significant benefit for me of walking in circles, day in, day out, is the motivation. I know I can pick up and go without having to think about anything except the weather outside. It’s the simplest way to get me moving and getting those steps in, as we love to say these days.

And it’s something I’d encourage you to try as well. You can squeeze in a loop in your lunch break, powering out of the office or home and around the largest park or nature trail in your local area. You can start or end your day with it, taking the dog for a circular spin, or ensuring your loop passes your favorite coffee shop for a caffeinated treat.

But don’t just take my word for it. Let’s take a look at some of the science around the physical and mental benefits (i.e., the sheer magic) of a good walk. And not just any walk – I’m talking about getting out there, day in and day out, on a route you know like the back of your hand.
