Polar Electro is looking for a Senior AI/ML Engineer for the Data Analytics & AI team
Polar Research Center is part of Polar R&D and it acts as an innovation accelerator for Polar product and service developments. Research Center comprises a multidisciplinary team with expertise ranging from sensor technology and algorithms to physiology, data, and AI sciences, as well as exercise and health sciences. The team conducts cutting-edge research in wearable technologies, follows scientific developments, and collaborates globally with academic and industry partners. Polar Research Center is located at our headquarters in Kempele.
As a Senior AI/ML Engineer in the Data Analytics & AI team, you will design and build production-grade ML systems that support advanced analytics and intelligent features across wearable devices and digital platforms. You will take ownership of ML engineering solutions while ensuring robustness, scalability, and scientific validity for the developed solutions. You will contribute to the development of advanced solutions for Polar products and services.
Your responsibilities will include:
·Drive the design and implementation of production-grade machine learning systems
- Own end-to-end model development, including training, evaluation, and iteration in collaboration with data scientists and domain experts
- Define and implement data collection arrangements, including data requirements and dataset governance to enable model development
- Collaborate closely with data scientists, software developers, and product teams to translate analytical models into efficient, user-facing services
- Ensure ML solutions are robust, scalable, and maintainable through appropriate testing, monitoring, and documentation
We expect you to have:
- Master’s or PhD degree or equivalent experience in computer science, biomedical engineering, applied mathematics, physics, or a related technical field
- Strong collaboration and communication skills in English, with the ability to work across data, firmware, mobile, software, and product teams
- Solid experience (3+ years) in hands-on model development (training, evaluation, iteration) with modern ML methods, e.g. deep learning architectures for time-series and sequences (CNNs, RNNs, transformers), self-supervised and transfer learning, and optionally generative AI
- Strong Python and modern ML frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow, plus familiarity with on-device/embedded ML frameworks (e.g. TensorFlow Lite, ONNX Runtime)
What’s seen beneficial:
- Experience with wearable sensor and/or time-series data (e.g., signal processing, labeling workflows, feature engineering)
- Knowledge of bio-medical measurements and bio signals and related solutions
- Model deployment experience to embedded devices and/or mobile platforms, and familiarity with optimization techniques such as quantization, pruning, and model conversion. Software engineering fundamentals (Git, CI/CD, testing)
- Cloud ML & MLOps experience with cloud ML platforms (e.g. AWS SageMaker, Google Vertex AI, or Azure ML), MLOps practices and tools (e.g. MLflow, DVC, Weights & Biases), and containerization/orchestration (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes)
Preferred location is Polar Headquarters at Kempele, other Polar locations in Finland are negotiable (Helsinki, Jyväskylä, Tampere).
