Nightly skin temperature

Monitoring your skin temperature during night provides valuable insights into your body’s state.

What is normal skin temperature?

Core body temperature is usually stable around +37 degrees Celsius (98.6°F), but skin temperature naturally displays minor fluctuations of up to one degree (1.8°F) from one night to another. For healthy adults, normal skin temperature measured at the wrist ranges between 33 and 37°C (92.3 and 98.4°F).

Nighttime offers an optimal moment to obtain an accurate representation of your body’s condition. Using wearables, skin surface temperatures can be conveniently monitored when your body is at rest in a stable environment, offering valuable insights into individual temperature trends and overall wellness. Rises in skin temperature above your 28-day average can be a sign of illness.

What can skin temperature tell you?

Skin temperatures above one’s usual range can indicate various factors, including fever, inflammation, or an impending illness. If you are feeling unwell, it is recommended to verify your temperature using a thermometer.

Women can also use these skin temperature insights to better understand which phase of their menstrual cycle they are in. Temperature changes over the course of the menstrual cycle and is higher in the second half of it.

How does the skin help regulate body temperature

The skin plays an important role in maintaining a stable core body temperature. When the body needs to cool down, blood flow increases near the skin and the blood vessels close to the skin dilate. Conversely, if body temperature drops, the blood vessels near the skin constrict, reducing blood flow to the skin and preserving heat.

Track your skin temperate when you sleep

Polar Nightly Skin Temperature allows you to automatically track your temperature throughout the night and provides daily updates compared to your average from the previous 28 days, which you can interpret for health insights.

While you sleep, a small sensor on the back of the watch measures and records your skin temperature every five minutes. In the morning, you can review the results from the previous night as well as weekly and monthly trends on Polar Flow.
