Data use for research and development purposes

Sports science research is at the core of everything we do at Polar. Our in-house Research Center comprises experts in biosignal technology, physiology, sports training, health, and data science. We conduct innovative studies to develop and improve wearable technologies, physical activity insights, and sleep tracking.

Polar may use your personal and non-personal data internally for research and development purposes to enhance technologies, develop new products, and improve services. We continuously analyze aggregated customer data New algorithms are being developed and tested, and customer mass data is being used to, for example, find anomalies in the features or to find devices that may not work properly. These results are not shared outside the company or published. They only support the in-house development work.

Service data contains no trade secrets.

This document was last updated in 13 August 2025. Updates may occur periodically, and we will inform registered customers via email or within our services. For further information on privacy and the processing of personal information, visit our Privacy Notice or Privacy FAQ.

Report Suspected Misuse

If you suspect data misuse, you may file a complaint with the relevant supervising authority. Your Data Protection Ombudsman monitors the compliance with the EU Data Act and the processing of personal information.

Polar Services and Applications

Polar Flow

Polar Flow is a cloud-based fitness and training app and web service that helps you track your training, activity, and sleep data, and analyze your progress. It works with your Polar product and serves as your automatic training diary by syncing all related data to your Polar Flow account.

Data storage and retention times

Polar Flow service data is stored on Polar’s servers in the EU (Ireland and Sweden). By default, your data is retained as long as your Flow account remains active. You can delete your account at any time by visiting account.polar.com.

To provide the Polar Flow service, we need your consent to process your data and deliver the related analyses and calculations. You must also accept our Terms of Use and confirm that you have read our Privacy Notice and Data Notice. If you do not provide or withdraw any mandatory consents, fail to accept the Terms of Use, or do not confirm having read the Notices, your account will be locked for 180 days. After this period, a 30-day deletion process will begin to permanently remove your account and all associated data.

Duration of the contract

The Polar Flow service is free to use, but it includes premium features that require a paid subscription. You may use the Polar Flow service until further notice, with premium features available according to their respective subscription terms.

Downloading your data

To download your data, visit account.polar.com and sign in using the same username and password as your Flow account. For detailed instructions, check this support document.

Sharing your data to a third-party

If you wish to transfer your data to a third party, please ask the receiving company to review our Polar API technical documentation. Through the third-party application, you can connect it to your Flow account and authorize the data transfer.

Polar Team Pro

Polar Team Pro is a player monitoring solution designed for professional sports teams. It combines GPS and motion data with heart rate information. With Polar Team Pro, coaches can monitor training sessions in real time using an iPad (sold separately), without the need for a base station or antenna. Training data can also be synced after sessions via the Team Pro Dock. Monitoring player performance provides valuable, accurate insights to support the coaching team’s analysis.

Data storage

Polar service data is stored on Polar’s servers in the EU (Ireland and Sweden). For the Team Pro solution, data retention depends on your organization’s license. Data is retained for 180 days after the license period ends, unless the organization requests earlier deletion.

Duration of the contract

The Polar Team Pro service is provided under a license agreement and its associated terms and conditions.

Sharing data to a third party

Your team is responsible for what data is stored in the system and how it is managed. This includes handling individual player requests, such as deleting or downloading their data. Data can be downloaded or transferred to a third party via the Polar API. To get started, ask your partner company to review our Polar API documentation. The team coach can then grant the partner access to team and team member data.

Polar Team app

The Polar Team application allows coaches and trainers of indoor sports to see exactly how hard each team member is working. This enables real-time, individualized coaching. It also provides insights into who is tiring, who needs to improve their fitness, and who still has energy to spare.

Data storage

The information you enter in the application, along with the training data, remains stored on your mobile device.

Duration of the contract

The Polar Team app is currently available for download and can be used until further notice.

Downloading your data

Your team is responsible for what data stored in the system and how it is managed. This includes handling individual player requests, such as those to delete or download their information. Data can be downloaded through the Polar Team application’s menu.

Polar Equine App

The Polar Equine application provides a quick and easy readout of your horse’s real-time heart rate, ECG, and RR data. It is available for Android devices and can be downloaded from Google Play.

Data storage

The information you enter in the application, along with the training data, remains on your mobile device. If you uninstall the application, all data will be deleted shortly thereafter.

Duration of the contract

The Polar Equine application is currently available for download and can be used until further notice.

Downloading your data

You can download your data using the download function in the Polar Equine application.
