Wearables – Leading Fitness Trend For 2020

With more than 50,000 members and certified professionals, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) is the global authority for sports medicine and exercise science. For the last 14 years, the editors of ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal® have circulated an electronic survey to thousands of professionals around the world to determine health and fitness trends for the following year. Twenty percent of responders were personal trainers and 10 % medical professionals. This survey guides health and fitness programming efforts for 2020 and beyond. The results of the survey also aim to help the health and fitness industry make business decisions for future and development.

Wearable technology was again the no. 1 trend as it has been since 2016 – the only exception was a drop to no. 3 in 2018. It includes fitness trackers, smart watches, HR monitors, and GPS tracking devices. While there was some question of accuracy by responders, these issues seem to have been resolved well enough. Other top five trends were high-intensity interval training (2nd), group training (3rd),training with free weights (4th) and personal training (5th).
