Troubleshooting RCX5 sensors

Try these troubleshooting instructions if your Polar training computer or sensor is not working as it should.

If the issue persists, please contact your closest Polar Service.

Troubleshooting heart rate signal reception

1. Are you wearing the heart rate sensor correctly?

The heart rate sensor should be worn flat against the skin, Polar logo in upright position. See example here.

If the training computer still cannot find your heart rate signal, try
a. take the sensor off your chest and detach it from the strap
b. wait for 30 seconds
c. snap the sensor back onto the strap and put the strap back onto your chest
d. try if the signal is found now.

2. Are the heart rate sensor electrodes thoroughly wet?

3. Is the heart rate sensor and the elastic strap clean?

4. Did the heart rate sensor you're using come in the RCX5 set?

If yes, check that you've paired the sensor with the training computer.
If not, check that the sensor is compatible with your training computer?

5. If you are using Polar T31C transmitter, make sure that there are no other heart rate sensors with GymLink transmission within 1 meter/ 3.3 feet radius at the beginning of the exercise.

This is to allow the RCX5 to lock onto your GymLink signal, a signal frequency the Polar T31C transmitter uses. A check mark is shown on display, on the man's chest, when the signal lock is done.

RCX5 uses both W.I.N.D. and GymLink transmission. See here for compatibility with other heart rate sensors.

6. Are the heart rate signals unusually high or otherwise abnormal?

Relocating the training computer or adjusting the heart rate sensor on your body may help. Possible sources of disturbance are listed here.

7. Is it time to change the battery?

Check that you've changed the RCX5 battery according to instructions. Please contact authorized Polar service if you need assistance.

8. Were you swimming when you got reading drop outs?

The strength of the heart's ECG signal can vary depending on your tissue composition. When heart rate measuring is done in water the likelihood for intermittent heart rate readings is greater than when measuring is done on land. Read more about swimming with Polar RCX5.

9. Is the display frozen?

If the display freezes, try resetting it.

Troubleshooting s3+ stride sensor

s3+ stride sensor requires pairing with the training computer. If your speed or distance readings don't seem right, try calibrating the sensor. This way you get the best possible accuracy.
You can do the calibration either on the fly or manually.

Troubleshooting G5 GPS sensor

How do I make sure I get the best GPS signal possible?

The best GPS signal reception can be reached when training in an open area where there are no obstructions for the satellite signals. Due to the nature of the GPS signal, for example hills, tall buildings, and trees may block the satellite signal. Rain, fog, and snow may also affect the signal quality. These conditions may result in uneven speed reading during the exercise and cause an uneven speed curve in Polar software even when you have exercised going at a steady pace.

If you are training a lot in an environment where the signal can get blocked, a reliable way of getting a speed reading is to set automatic lap to 500m or 1km and check the average speed for the lap when your wrist unit takes the lap and beeps.

If you are exercising on a forest road, try changing the sensor to your roadside arm to see if it helps with the signal reception.

My G5 GPS sensor is not finding signal. What's up?

Polar G5 GPS sensor needs signals from four different satellites to establish its starting position. Depending on the conditions, the connection should be found within 30 - 60s, or faster if you've started the sensor at the same position previously. Remaining stationary until signal is found can help speed up the process.

Check that the sensor is suficiently charged. The led indicators will help you determine this.

Troubleshooting cycling speed signal reception

RCX5 is compatible with CS speed sensor W.I.N.D.

1. Have you paired the sensor with the training computer?
2. Does the light flash in the sensor when the speed magnet passes it? The light indicates that the speed sensor is positioned correctly and that the sensor is alive. For more on positioning, see CS speed sensor W.I.N.D. user manual or installation video.

CS speed sensor W.I.N.D. transmission range is approx. 10m / 32ft.

Troubleshooting cycling cadence signal reception

RCX5 is compatible with CS cadence sensorâ„¢ W.I.N.D.

1. Have you paired the sensor with the training computer?
2. Does a light flash in the sensor when the cadence magnet passes it? The light indicates that the cadence sensor is positioned correctly and that the sensor is alive. For more on positioning, see CS cadence sensor W.I.N.D. user manual or installation video.
