Calibrate Stride Sensor with RCX5

Polar RCX5 training computer is compatible with Polar s3 stride sensor W.I.N.D. and Polar s3+ stride sensor. You can calibrate the stride sensor by running a known distance or by entering the calibration factor manually.

Calibration of the stride sensor improves accuracy of speed, pace, and distance measurements. Calibration by running is recommended:
• before using the sensor for the first time
• if there are changes in your running style
• if the position of the sensor on the shoe is changed. This often happens when you take a new pair of running shoes into use or if you, for instance, switch the sensor from your right shoe to your left one.

Stride sensor calibration is sport specific. You can use different calibration factor for different styles of running. For example, if you have created new sport (Jogging) in WebSync software, you need to calibrate the stride sensor for the new sport profile. Do the calibration at your normal running speed.

Before calibrating the stride sensor make sure that
• you've paired the sensor with your training computer.
• you've enabled the stride sensor featureSelect SettingsSport profilesRunning (or sport created in WebSync) ⇒ Stride sensorOn in the training computer.

Calibrating by running a set distance

Minimum calibration distance is 400 meters / 0.3 miles.

1. Select SettingsSport profilesRunning (or sport created in WebSync) ⇒ Stride sensor calibrationBy running.
2. Enter the wanted calibration distance. Press OK button to confirm.
Stand still until stride sensor is found is displayed.
3. Press OK. Run ... km/mi is displayed.
4. Press OK and start the run with the sensor foot.

Run the preset distance at a steady pace.

5. Press OK after xxx km/mi is displayed.
6. Stop exactly on the stop line of the preset distance. Press OK.
7. When the calibration is successful, Calibrated to x.xxx is displayed. The new calibration factor is now in use.
8. After calibration, Continue recording? is displayed. Select Yes if you wish to continue training.
Otherwise, select No.

Calibration canceled is displayed if you have cancelled the calibration by pressing the Stop button.
Calibration failed is displayed if calibration fails. Try again.

If Check sensor is displayed, cancel the calibration and start again.

Calibrating on the fly

If you aren't training with distance-based targets, you can do the sensor calibration at any phase of your training by using the lap distance correction. Just run a known distance (min. 400 meters / 0.3 miles). To ensure successful calibration, disable the AutoLap feature.

1. In time mode press OK to enter pre-training mode. Browse the sport profiles with Up/Down.
2. Wait until the stride sensor and other enabled sensors are found.
3. Press OK to start the training.
4. When you are at the starting point of a known lap distance, press OK to save the lap. And once you have run the whole lap distance, press OK again to save the lap again.
5. Now you can calibrate the sensor:
⇒ Press and hold Light to enter the Quick menu.
⇒ Browse to Calibrate stride sensor and press OK.
6. Browse to Set correct lap distance and press OK. Fix the displayed lap distance with the distance you just ran, and accept with OK. Calibrated to x.xxx displayed.

The sensor is now calibrated.

You can calibrate the stride sensor also by editing the whole covered distance.
1. In time mode press OK to enter pre-trainnig mode. Browse the sport profiles with Up/Down.
2. Wait until the stride sensor and other enabled sensors are found.
3. Start the training by pressing OK.
4. Press and hold Light to enter the Quick menu. Browse to Calibrate stride sensor and press OK.
5. Browse to Set correct distance and press OK. Edit the shown distance with the corrected distance. Press OK to accept.

Calibrated to x.xxx displayed.
The sensor is now calibrated.

Entering a known calibration factor

The calibration factor is calculated as a ratio of the actual distance to the uncalibrated distance.

Example
You run 1200m. The training computer shows a distance of 1180m ⇒ calibration factor is 1.000.

Calculating the calibration factor
1.000*1200/1180 = 1.017. The measuring range for the factor is 0.500-1.500.

To calibrate the stride sensor manually before training
1. Select Settings Sport profiles Running (or sport created in WebSync) Stride sensor Set factor
2. Adjust the factor.

Option is also available during training, when stride sensor is in use. Press and hold Light to go to Quick menu Calibrate stride sensor Set factor.
