Troubleshooting FT80 sensors

Try these troubleshooting instructions if your Polar training computer or sensor is not working as it should. If the issue persists, please contact your closest Polar Service.

Troubleshooting heart rate signal reception

1. Are you wearing the heart rate sensor correctly?

The heart rate sensor should be worn flat against the skin, Polar logo in upright position. See example here.

If the training computer still cannot find your heart rate signal, try
a. take the sensor off your chest and detach it from the strap
b. wait for 30 seconds
c. snap the sensor back onto the strap and put the strap back onto your chest
d. try if the signal is found now.

2. Are the heart rate sensor electrodes thoroughly wet?

Making sure the sensor belt is thoroughly wet will help with conductivity. You can also try electrode gel if the signal is weak.

Abundant chest hair can affect signal strength.

3. Is the heart rate sensor and the elastic strap clean?

4. Did the heart rate sensor you're using come in the FT80 set?

The FT80 uses GymLink transmission, which is a Polar proprietary coded transmission. Polar also has another proprietary transmission called W.I.N.D., as well as Bluetooth sensors neither of whic work with FT80.

If you have purchased your sensor as an accessory, or are using another sensor which didn't come with your FT80, please check that the sensor is compatible with your training computer.

5. Are there other heart rate sensors that use GymLink close by?

FT80 uses GymLink transmission. Make sure that there are no other heart rate sensors with GymLink within 1 meter/ 3.3 feet radius at the beginning of the exercise. This is to allow the FT80 to lock onto your heart rate signal and no one else's.

6. Are the heart rate signals unusually high or otherwise abnormal?

Relocating the training computer or adjusting the heart rate sensor on your body may help. Possible sources of disturbance are listed here.

7. Is it time to change the battery?

Check that you've changed the FT80 battery according to instructions. Please contact authorized Polar service if you need assistance.

8. Were you swimming when you got reading drop outs?

The strength of the heart's ECG signal can vary depending on your tissue composition. When heart rate measuring is done in water the likelihood for intermittent heart rate readings is greater than when measuring is done on land. Read more about swimming with Polar FT80.

9. Is the display frozen?

Troubleshooting S1 Foot Pod™

S1 Foot Pod™ requires no pairing with the training computer. If your speed or distance readings don't seem right, try calibrating the sensor. This way you get the best possible accuracy.
You can do the calibration either on the fly or manually.

In stable conditions S1 Foot Pod™ measurement accuracy is ±3 % or better once calibrated.

Troubleshooting G1 GPS sensor

How do I make sure I get the best GPS signal possible?

The best GPS signal reception can be reached when training in an open area where there are no obstructions for the satellite signals. Due to the nature of the GPS signal, for example hills, tall buildings, and trees may block the satellite signal. Rain, fog, and snow may also affect the signal quality. These conditions may result in uneven speed reading during the exercise and cause an uneven speed curve in Polar software even when you have exercised going at a steady pace.

If you are training a lot in an environment where the signal can get blocked, a reliable way of getting a speed reading is to set automatic lap to 500m or 1km and check the average speed for the lap when your wrist unit takes the lap and beeps.

If you are exercising on a forest road, try changing the sensor to your roadside arm to see if it helps with the signal reception.

Where should I wear G1 GPS sensor when I train?

Wear the G1 GPS sensor and the training computer on the same arm. Check that the sensor is at most 35 - 40 cm / 13 - 15 distance from the training computer. This way you don't exceed the range and get the best signal. If the signal is not detected or if signal updating is slow, bring the sensor closer to your elbow.



Let the training computer find your heart rate before you start the G1 GPS to ensure good heart rate reception.

Your arms are usually extended when cycling. Bringing G1 GPS sensor closer to the training computer - wearing it on your wrist or attaching it onto the handlebar - will bring the sensor within range.

Why can't I see the map for my training at polarpersonaltrainer.com?

The sensor provides speed/pace and distance measurement for outdoor sports, for example running or cycling. It does not collect route information. If you'd like to get your training route, consider either using Polar Beat, a free iPhone app, or upgrading to a G5 GPS sensor-compatible training computer

My G1 GPS sensor is not finding signal. What's up?

Polar G1 GPS sensor needs signals from four different satellites to establish its starting position. Depending on the conditions, the connection should be found within 30 - 60s, or faster if you've started the sensor at the same position previously. Remaining stationary until signal is found can help speed up the process.

My G1 GPS sensor battery runs out too fast. What can I do?

You might be using the sensor in its full power mode. It has two modes: full power mode and low power mode. With low power mode you can increase battery life by up to 40%. For maximum accuracy of speed and distance, use the full power mode.

To switch between the two modes
a. Activate the sensor
b. Press and hold the button for five green battery indicator flashes to change modes.
When the battery indicator led flashes green four times when full power mode is activated.
When the light flashes red four times, low power mode is activated.

Every time you turn the sensor on, the flashing battery led indicates which mode is activated.


Default is full power mode.

The G1 speed range is 0-199km/h / 0-123.6m/h.
